Sosyete ’25 – Yan
Sosyete ’25 close out their pre-album run with “Yan”, the final single before debut LP Yaygara lands May 22nd on Tru Thoughts. We’ve followed this one closely: “Bilmece” (W10) held its breath in a slow-burning haze, and “Oyun” (W14) pushed into disco-funk. “Yan” sits somewhere between the two: more open, more direct, and the warmest thing they’ve put out.
The trio is Istanbul-born vocalist Merve Erdem (Kit Sebastian, Brainfeeder), guitarist and producer Glenn Fallows (Globeflower Masters, Mr Bongo), and producer/composer Paul Elliott (Call Sender, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band). “Yan” means burn in Turkish, and the production follows that logic: Paul built it from the vocal and the bassline out, picking phrases to mirror on other instruments and building counter-melodies around Merve’s delivery. Two guests bring the arrangement to life: drummer Michael Reed (Call Sender) drives the track and lands a strong final fill, while Dan Smith’s Hammond organ adds warmth throughout.
Merve’s vocal is the anchor. She’s working in the register of ’90s Turkish dark pop: unhurried, a little melancholy, with enough momentum to carry the track without overstating it. The central refrain loops back until it feels less like a chorus and more like something shared. With three singles now mapping the range of Yaygara, the album is shaping up as a genuine arrival.
Yaygara is out May 22nd on Tru Thoughts.
